Thoughts on: "How I got promoted to staff engineer twice"
My thoughts on "How I got promoted to staff engineer twice" which I've recently read.
This is an interesting real-world story, rather than the glossy and idealised perspective of a Staff Engineer, where Sean Goedecke retells a personal story of being promoted to a Staff Engineer within two different companies, and reflects on what this demonstrates about what companies value from Engineers, how they choose to recognise and express their valuation of you with a promotion.
I believe there are truths here which are not universal, but are likely prevelant within our industry and reflect how companies struggle to recognise, reward and compensate Individual Contributors in a way that’s aligned with industry expectations without invoking the Management Track and/or the Peter Principle.
